Did You Know?
Memory Loss and Dementia can be reversible.
  • Most PCPs and specialists aren't trained in Memory Loss or how to detect and treat reversible causes.
  • We like giving Good News!  Memory loss does not have to be Alzheimer's or Dementia
  • There are plenty of reversible causes of memory loss.  But waiting until there have been months of symptoms may be too late. The sooner we do something about it the better!  Don't be afraid to have your memory evaluated.  We can help, whatever the cause.

Did You Know?

We know what helps prevent Alzheimer's.
  • Every month there are more and more studies coming out about the best ways to lower our risk of memory loss and Alzheimer's Disease.  Dr. Glazer follows these developments every day. Let's talk about this on a visit!
10% of people over age 65 have Dementia, and 30 to 40% of people over age 85 have Dementia.
  • All adults over age 70 should be tested for the ability to drive safely.
  • A cognitive neurologist such as Dr. Glazer is the best-equipped specialist to conduct an accurate and sensitive evaluation.
We can slow down Memory Loss
  • Currently available therapies are better than medication at slowing down memory loss.  Currently available medications may slow down memory loss by 4 years or more.  Other therapies more than double the effect of medication.

PCPs, neurologists, or other specialists can miss or delay a diagnosis of Dementia from 60 to 100% of the time
  • Most Medical School and Neurology training does not include Memory Disorders as a requirement.
  • Also, 30% of patients given a diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease wound up not having Alzheimer's when their brains were examined under the microscope.  See a cognitive neurologist like Dr. Glazer, who has been specially trained, for a diagnosis.
Cognitive Neurologists like Dr. Glazer can be 97-100% accurate at making a diagnosis.
  • As Memory Specialists, we are uniquely trained to understand what is normal and what is not for age.  Is this a reversible cause of memory loss, or something that can be slowed down if caught early?

  • If you are looking for a Memory Specialist, please make sure they have a Cognitive Neurology Fellowship as certified by the United Council for Neurologic Subspecialties.  You can find a list of diplomates of this Board here, and under subspecialty, click "Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry."

The earlier we do something about memory loss the better chance we have of slowing it down.

  • You may have heard that currently available therapies for memory "don't work."  In the majority of cases this is not true.  Often memory loss does not get diagnosed until it is too late to significantly help the person.  We are focused on early diagnosis so we can reverse, treat, or slow it down.  Don't wait months for an appointment.

Research

Are you interested in Research?

By volunteering the powers of your brain, or donating your brain to research, you have the power to help others, and to help expedite a cure for memory loss.

You have probably seen several ads for enrolling in research studies.  Dr. Glazer can discuss the types she recommends, and the ones that meet your needs to find something for you.  She can then give you the contact information to enroll in the study.

Everyone hopes that the research study they're in will be The Cure, and we hope so too!  But be prepared to not know whether you are receiving treatment or placebo, and that there can be unknown side effects, or even worsening of memory.  Dr. Glazer can discuss these risks with you.

About Dr. Glazer

Hilary grew up in Rockland County, New York in a small family.  Her mom is Susan, a pianist and retired administrative assistant at Atlantic Records, and her dad was Ted, an illustration artist and project leader for an organization for mentally challenged adults.

She attended Ramapo Senior High School, and graduated valedictorian of her class.  She attended Tufts University where she majored in Biology and Spanish. She then obtained a scholarship to Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine.  She conducted research and away rotations at Harvard Medical School and University of California San Francisco under one of the most renowned Behavioral Neurologists in the world, Dr. Bruce Miller, the world's expert on Frontotemporal Dementia.  She completed Neurology Residency and Chief Residency at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital.  She then went for fellowship training in Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology at University of Florida, under one of the other most renowned Neurologists in the world, Dr. Kenneth Heilman, whose lectures were preserved as part of an Oral History Project through the American Academy of Neurology.

Dr. Glazer has received numerous awards throughout her career, including the James Stern Leadership Scholarship, Summa Cum Laude, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, and the Award for Compassionate Care in Neurology.

Dr. Glazer's Story

"In 2002, my dad was a 58 year old artist leading a team of therapists for mentally disabled adults, admired by his friends and coworkers for his intelligence and charisma.  In just 8 short weeks, he developed cancer metastatic to the brain and needed round-the-clock help for not being able to eat, confusion, and abnormal behavior.  My mom and I were told to place him in a Nursing Home!  It was the worst time of our lives.  We scrambled for the means to provide him care without placing him in a nursing home, and were left with nowhere to turn and no advice from his medical team.  My father passed away several days later peacefully at home, but this left a big impact on me.  As I applied to Medical School, and throughout my training, I thought, 'I'm never going to let this happen to anyone.'

I see the uncertainty that comes with getting older and not knowing what to plan for as very similar to the situation my mom and I had to deal with, and I'm determined to make it better for as many people as I can.

Many people who are worried about memory changes actually turn out to have normal memory, and can be reassured!  In other cases, memory loss can be reversed when treated early.

If there is a possible chronic condition causing memory loss, I believe everyone deserves an early diagnosis, knowledge of their diagnosis, education and support for the entire family, and the opportunity for multiple discussions about what to do when they need more help.

My father was more than just a number in a bed and I try to treat all of my patients and families as family.  Also, I want everyone out there to know that there is always hope for anyone facing a possible neurological condition."
